While the Maxxis tag on the tire in the photo shows a standard 29x2.6 the tire actually a WT version as the written description states.;

I ride on a lot of hard pack with small gravel on top so it's pretty slick around turns and up hills. I had less knobby tires on my bike. I was loosing traction up hills and was having to brake more around corners because of traction issues. I put these Minion tires on my bike because I've had them before. I rode yesterday on a heavy switchback trail with lots of loose gravel. You are going to slip a little on a trail like that no matter what but it was 90% less than with the less knobby tires I had on there. There was no loss of traction peddling up steep hills.;
