I have been a SPD fan for a long time and tried over the recent years a few "Enduro" style flat clipless pedals only to have them fall apart or wear bearings out in a few months. The most recent try was the Shimano PD-M820 clipless Saint DH pedals. I loved the large platform and kept the spikes super high. The first pair only lasted 10 months before the spindle showed a lot of play and began creaking with noise. I began looking for a rebuild but classic Shimano a specialized tool is needed to pull apart and service and replace the spindles. The cost of those were almost as much as the pedals complete. Luckily the replacements were covered by REI so a new set were thrown on.. lasted 6 months before play ensued. Not classic SPD that I have experience but it's a different system from their original designs. Enter LOOK. I kept the Shimano clips and just threw on the pedals - the feel is similar to SPD but noticeably easier to clip in as well as a the best experience of staying clipped in I've ever had. No surprise O.S. moments and when you want to come out it's a smooth ramp up then slight tension at the end before the separation. Super easy and great float feeling all other times. Highly recommend. I'll update after a few more months of use but after a solid month of heavy smashing on East Coast rocks they are still solid with no play at all.
