I ordered a set of these Marathon Mondial performance line clincher tires with a wire bead in the 700x40c size for my mtb.
A few things, the width of the tire and the tread is NOT as aggressive or wide as the pic lets you believe. Both are very misleading in the pic I know it has a size on it but it is skinnier than the 700x38c tires that came off (old tires had tread half as deep also). That’s the cost of shopping online (not preferred but how many bike stores are really out there). I did measure the tire VERY VERY CAREFULLY with a set of calipers. Measured from the VERY VERY TIP OF THE TREAD on the WIDEST part of the tire from side to side and it still ONLY came to 39.68 mm (1 9/16”) wide. Sidewall to sidewall only came to 37.28 mm (just under 1.5”). So I do think it’s manufactured on the skinny side (in my opinion incorrectly just due to the actual vast difference in actual size and advertised size). The company has a good reputation for reliability so that is still remain to be seen as I only have rode a week on them. They ride ok, just stiffer due to a smaller tire. I just wanted more meat and tread than what I had for more grip, and softness but considering it’s actually a smaller tire, it’ rides more stiff than what I had on it (A bigger tire absorbed rocks, roots, etc…. better). I still do ride on hard pack and streets sometimes so i obviously didn’t get a real aggressive tire. I went with a tire that “looked” like what would fit my needs except I only got a partial percentage of what I wanted (mainly the size proportions was the biggest concern especially when measurement don’t change no matter where your at in the world, so not sure what the hell they were measuring when they made the mold for this size of tire). Again, online shopping woes (however unfair because of companies, with plenty of resources with products on the higher side of the cost, not displaying actual product. Would have sent back if it wasn’t so much time and trouble). Anyone want to nit pick my observations please feel free to look at an actual set and look at the pictures provided, mount them, measure them, and assess it yourselves. However the actual measurements DO NOT LIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
** HOWEVER, the tires were shipped nicely packed in a box that without any damage or concerns. I ordered them on a Saturday and received them the following Saturday. Had zero issues with the seller. Thanks !!!!!!!
