Good old 8 speed. Cheap as chips and does the job. I needed a new Cassette and didn't want to waste money "upgrading" to 9/10/11/12 speed Gear Shifters/Chain/Chainrings etc. when my trusty old Shimano XT/XTR 8 speed stuff still works perfectly well. Of course these Cassettes are also available for 9/10/11 and 12 speed ratios. This review is applicable mainly to the 8 and 9 speed SRAM Cassettes. I wanted 11-28 gear ratios although other ratios up to 11-34 are available but the gaps between the ratios start becoming rather large with the 11-32 and 11-34 Cassette. This SRAM Cassette is on par with Shimano in my opinion. I cant tell any difference regarding the durability or gear shifting quality. The PG850 is on par with Shimanos 3rd tier stuff like LX/105 which is fine by me. I wanted the smallest sprockets to start 11-12 -14 but you can also choose 11-13-15 on the 11-28 size Cassette so be sure to check this when you order it if you are bothered about such things (I am).
The Cassette looks rather fancy in Chrome with transparent Orange (plastic) spacers (at least for the first 10 minutes until it all gets covered in oil and road grime). The PG850 Cassette is fixed together by tiny Allen screws so you can take it apart and "mix and match" the sprockets with other SRAM and Shimano 8 speed sprockets if you want to make your own custom gear ratios (if you have a spare Cassette with different size sprockets). You will (of course) require a number of specialist tools to remove the old Cassette and fit this new one. I purchased the tools years ago (total cost would now be maybe £15-£20 on Amazon so it would be a good idea to purchase these at the same time as the Cassette) and you will probably save a few quid fitting it yourself rather than taking it to your local bike shop (sorry local bike shops) even taking into account the cost of the tools. Get a quote from the shop first though if you are unsure whether to order the tools and don't know anyone who can fit it for you. It shouldn't take a novice more than about 45 minutes to do the work (I can do the work in less than 10 minutes). Just check carefully online first which tools you need to order. You will need to be fairly mechanically competent (and physically fit) to do the work but it isn't too difficult if you are feeling up to the task.;

bought this to use with Wahoo Kickr - it installs fairly easily and works well - I don't have a bunch of miles on it (yet) but appears to be holding up just fine - would recommend for the price and can confirm it works with the Kickr - you will need to use the spacer provided by Wahoo when you remove the included 11-speed cassette to make this 8-speed cassette work;

Shimano has mostly abandoned the legacy market but fortunately SRAM and a few other companies still make quality replacement products. This is one of them. Decent light weight cassette. Not going to replace your XT/XTR cassette tooth for tooth and gram for gram but it's good enough for most of us still riding 20 year old + bikes. In fact it's better than anything shimano is offering.
